IRS Makes Penalty Relief Easier: What Taxpayers Need to Know

The IRS has announced a significant improvement that could benefit millions of taxpayers. Beginning in 2026, the agency is introducing an Automatic Exemption from Penalty (AEP) process, making it easier for eligible taxpayers to receive relief without having to submit a separate request.

Previously, taxpayers who qualified for First-Time Penalty Abatement had to know about the program and request it. Under the new system, the IRS will automatically review eligible accounts and apply relief when the taxpayer has a strong history of filing and paying on time.

Who May Qualify?

Generally, this relief is intended for taxpayers who:

  • Have a good compliance history.
  • Filed required tax returns on time.
  • Paid taxes or arranged payment when due.
  • Meet the IRS eligibility requirements.

Keep in mind that penalty relief does noteliminate the tax owed or any interest that has accrued. It only removes certain penalties for qualifying taxpayers.

Why This Matters

Many taxpayers unknowingly paid penalties they could have avoided simply because they weren’t aware relief was available. Automating this process reduces paperwork and helps taxpayers receive the benefits they’re entitled to more quickly.
